While most adults would prefer a lower profile look for their orthodontic treatment, many don’t feel comfortable trusting themselves with removable aligners (Invisalign). For these people, lingual ‘behind-the-teeth’ braces are a great alternative!
The main advantage to lingual braces is twofold: they aren’t visible, and they’re fixed, unlike Invisalign's removable aligners. It may surprise you that this is considered a benefit, considering the fact that Invisalign aligners being removable is one of their advantages. After all, the ability remove your orthodontic appliances to eat and clean your teeth is clearly a bonus!
Ultimately, however, what constitutes an 'advantage' varies from person to person.
Removable aligners are great for people who are completely sure they'll keep their aligners full time in despite pain, tightness, inconvenience or discomfort.
But if you're not completely certain that you won't remove your aligners when things get uncomfortable, or if you think you may simply forget about them once in a while, lingual braces may be a better choice.
It's really important to be honest with yourself about this. It’s not a moral failing if you think you won't be able to stay consistent with your treatment if left to your own devices, and you'll be better off in the long run if you choose a treatment option that truly suits your needs and personality.
And, you're not alone if you feel this way. Many of our patients aren’t sure they can trust themselves to be consistent with removable aligners. Lingual braces are a great choice for these people, because they are still essentially invisible, but are not removable.
