It's finally here: the day your braces come off! This is a happy day both for patients, and for orthodontists too. Here's what to do after your braces come off to keep your straight new smile healthy.
Taking braces off is a quick process. Your orthodontist will gently remove the braces, as well as any bonding cement that remains.
At Austin Heights Orthodontics, we're just as pleased when this day arrives as our patients are. We very much enjoy seeing the outcome of the previous months or even years of treatment, of course. But what we like best is seeing our patients’ happy faces when they see their straight new smiles unobstructed for the first time!
Now that the braces are gone, the maintenance portion of your treatment begins. There are several different things to think about when it comes to maintaining your new smile, such as the following:
For about a year after your braces come off, you’ll have to wear a retainer either full time or part time, and then intermittently thereafter. Retainer are just as important as braces are, because they allow your teeth to settle firmly into their new position. If you fail to wear your retainer as prescribed by your orthodontist, there may be a risk that your teeth will become misaligned again.
Regular Dental Check Ups
We all know that going to the dentist regularly is one of the most important parts of maintaining a healthy smile. After your orthodontic treatment is complete, you’ll have to continue seeing your dentist at least two times a year, and visiting your orthodontist regularly as well. This will allow us to monitor your smile and make sure your excellent results are maintained.
Good Oral Hygiene
Keep up the rigorous oral hygiene routine you established while you were wearing braces to keep your new smile healthy! You don’t have to spend all the additional time cleaning the braces themselves anymore, but the extra thorough brushing and flossing habits your developed when you had your braces should continue now.
Once their orthodontic treatment is over, many of our patients notice a slight difference in colour where their brackets were attached. They often choose to make the colour consistent and add the finishing touch to their new smiles by having their teeth whitened.
